The Transportation Research Board is soliciting abstracts for the upcoming Conference on Advancing Additive Manufacturing and Construction in Transportation. We are seeking abstracts from researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and students from all around the world focused on emerging issues at the intersection of transportation systems and the applications and implications of both Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Additive Construction (AC)  for the following two technical tracks:

Track A

Policy, Standards, Planning, and Logistics

Track B

Engineering, Materials, & Infrastructure

 Impacts of Additive Manufacturing on:

  • Supply chain resilience
  • Efficient freight movement
  • Regional manufacturing and last-mile policies
  • Certification and standards
  • Economic, environmental, and social benefits and costs
  • Safety and quality benefits and costs
  • Workforce development

Current & Future States of Engineering, Materials, & Infrastructure:

  • 3-D Printing robotics
  • Novel materials
  • In-situ material harvesting
  • Sustainable materials
  • One-button 3-D printing
  • Interlayer bond strength
  • Printing in remote and extreme environments
  • Related areas of research & development

Abstracts can address questions and topics such as:

  • Is our transportation workforce ready for digital construction, including new materials and robotic automation?
  • Can or will 3D-printing technology:
    • Help to make the global supply chain more resilient?
    • Lead to more sustainable freight movement?
    • Change the face of regional manufacturing and localized deliveries?
    • Change the way we design, build, and maintain our roads, tunnels, and bridges?
    • Lead to better time-cost-quality-safety?
    • Learn from other construction sectors?

The conference will consider extended abstracts AND not full papers. Full papers may be submitted to the Transportation Research Record (TRR) at any time but will not be assessed by the conference committee. Shorter abstracts (500 words) will be considered for emerging topics and research in progress. All abstracts must be written in the proper format as described in the 2024 Conference on AM and AC guidelines and submitted to the TRB abstract website.
