Biography
Dr. Michael Pluimer has a PhD in Civil Engineering (Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA) as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota – Duluth (UMD), and he is also the Director of UMD’s Advanced Materials Center. Dr. Pluimer owns and operates Crossroads Engineering Services, a consulting company focused on the development and analysis of more sustainable and resilient materials for the civil engineering industry, and his research has resulted in the development of multiple national and international standards which promote and encourage the use of post-consumer and post-industrial recycled materials for the manufacturing of plastic pipes, diverting billions of pounds of plastics from entering our landfills and polluting our planet while also reducing our carbon footprint. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, Dr. Pluimer spent 25 years as a practicing engineer in various industries. He was the co-PI of NCHRP Project 4-39 on the incorporation of recycled polyethylene materials into corrugated HDPE pipes.
Dr. Pluimer is very active in TRB and ASTM and is an officer on several committees, including Chair of ASTM F17.40 on Test Methods for Plastic Pipes and Communications Coordinator for TRB Committee AKB70 on Culverts, Buried Bridges, and Soil-Structure Interaction. In 2023, he was awarded with the ASTM Award of Merit for his contributions to ASTM Committee F17, the highest technical award granted to an individual by ASTM International.
