Biography
Monica Blaney is the Chief, Data Governance and GIS Analysis of the Safety Research and Analysis branch of the Transport Dangerous Goods Directorate at Transport Canada in Ottawa, Canada. Ms. Blaney joined the Directorate in 2014 and was tasked with setting up a new safety analytics function in the branch shortly after the Lac Mégantic tragedy. She then took over the management of the information/data and IT systems for the Directorate as well as the GIS analysis of dangerous goods that involve supply chain analyses, modal analyses as well as regional.
Previously, she led the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative and Western Canada portfolio for transportation infrastructure and freight systems analyses at Transport Canada. She had also been tasked with working with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration on freight transportation data collaboration. Before this, she was the manager for rail/intermodal/marine at Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation’s Strategic Policy Branch in Edmonton, Alberta.
Ms. Blaney has served with Transport Canada for the past fifteen years and has more than 30 years of experience in transportation and logistics analysis, planning and operations both in the private sector and public sector. She is a graduate of the University of Manitoba holding two Bachelors of Science degrees in Statistics and Agriculture. She also completed her Master's of Business Administration - Maritime Logistics and Management at the University of Tasmania. She has served on several US National Sciences Academy research panels dealing with freight analysis including the recent Domestic Transport of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Ethanol study that the US Transportation Research Board conducted to inform federal, state and local officials.
Ms. Blaney is a Canadian Soccer Referee, a registered Soccer Referee Instructor in Ontario and the Head Referee for West Carleton Soccer Club. She resides in Ottawa with her husband and two children.
