Speaker Biography
Dr. Kimmel has over 18 years’ experience in automated vehicle engineering and policy, including technology development, testing, standards and regulation. He leads EY's Emerging Mobility Data Analytics practice, supporting public and private sector clients in AV research, development, and deployment. He has supported TRB, NHTSA, FMCSA, FHWA, ITS JPO, and State DOT AV research programs, including leading several projects as a principal investigator. He has worked directly with heavy-duty and light-duty manufacturers, as well as with the Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium, to develop safety data collection specifications, safety performance indicators, and rules of the road compliance strategies. He serves as Vice-Chair of the SAE On-Road Automated Driving Committee, and participates in several international standards development activities for AVs. As a Transportation Policy Advisor in the US House of Representatives, he drafted AV legislation that was passed into law through the 2015 FAST Act. He got his start in vehicle automation with the DARPA Challenges, and was a research engineer developing automated mining equipment software architecture for a large vehicle manufacturer.
