A brief overview of expected challenges for automated driving on the Dutch Highway Network
Speaker Biography
Onno Tool is a Dutch born and based senior advisor on C-ITS and automated driving. He has been working for Rijkswaterstaat in various capacities since 2001. Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency within the ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management responsible for managing the highways, waterways and main water system.
Onno is currently the project lead for the Truck Platooning Trial within the Ursa Major neo program. In this project the potential impacts of Truck Platooning on the primary processes of a road operator are investigated. Onno also participates on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat in the national Task Force on the safe implementation of ADS/ALKS vehicles in the Netherlands.
Since the start of the C-Roads platform in 2016, Onno is the chair of Task Force 2 within Working Group 2. This task force is harmonizing the functional specifications of implemented C-ITS services by the European member states and works together with the other C-Roads taskforces on an integral set of C-Roads C-ITS technical and functional specifications.
Between 2011-2013 Onno was detailed in Washington DC, working as loan staff both at FHWA (www.fhwa.dot.gov) and TRB (www.trb.org) on the implementation of SHRP2 projects, especially in the focus area Reliability which focused on reliable travel times on highways through improving Traffic Operations.
Prior to his work at Rijkswaterstaat he worked for five years at 2 consulting companies. Onno holds a degree in Master of Science in Econometrics (Decision Management, “Statistics in Simulation”, 1997), university of Tilburg in the Netherlands.
