Speaker Biography
Marjory Blumenthal joined the RAND Corporation as director of the experimental Science, Technology, and Policy program in spring 2016. She remains a Senior Policy Researcher as a RAND adjunct, and as Principal with MSBlumenthal, LLC she addresses science and technology policy in other contexts. Marjory’s work at RAND and elsewhere has addressed such topics as automated vehicles (AVs), smart cities, the impact of research, innovation in China, and trends and applications of artificial intelligence, 5G, and other emerging technologies. Her AV work has focused on assessing safety and, most recently, comparing legal and policy regimes around the world. As founding executive director of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, she addressed the full range of information technologies and their impacts. In 2003, Marjory took a leadership position at Georgetown University, developing academic strategy, promoting innovation in teaching and learning, and fostering research, especially in the sciences. In 2013-2016, Marjory was executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology within the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, addressing such issues as biosecurity, cybersecurity, big data and privacy, climate change adaptation, and technologies for cities. In her White House role Marjory began to assess AV trends and issues. Marjory is the principal author and/or substantive editor of numerous books and articles and serves on a variety of boards and advisory bodies. She did her undergraduate work at Brown University and her graduate work at Harvard University.
