The presentation will provide an overview of the "ADS for Rural America" U.S. Demonstration Grant project. After the overview, we present 3 specific examples of what makes automation challenging on rural roadways. We describe the approaches we took to resolve those challenges and improve the automation performance of the ADS transit vehicle. We also describe limitations and next steps.
Speaker Biography
Mr. Ahmad is Deputy Director of the University of Iowa Driving Safety Research Institute. He has a Masters degree in Computer Science and Masters in Business Administration from the University of Iowa. For the past 25 years, he has worked on research studies related to studying vehicle safety and human performance. More recently, Mr. Ahmad has led a series of on-road demonstration projects utilizing automated vehicles and HD maps. He is currently serving as the project manager for the USDOT ADS Demonstration Grant project titled “ADS for Rural America.”
