Speaker Biography
Joel leads the Safety Standards program at Aurora ensuring all relevant industry standards and best practices are being implemented within the company. In addition to this effort, Joel represents Aurora at various Standards Development Organizations such as SAE. IEEE, and AVSC.
He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico where he also happens to call home. Before joining Aurora, Joel engaged with the automotive industry from the other side as a regulatory engineer at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) where his primary focus was on the regulatory implementation of the Electric Vehicle Safety regulatory standards and the Global Technical Regulation No. 20 on Electric Vehicle Safety. While at NHTSA, Joel contributed to the first publications of NHTSA/DOT Automated Driving System Policy which introduced novel approaches to ensuring safety and trust with the government through the suggestion of publicizing Voluntary Safety Self-Assessment reports.
