Session Description
Many believe that the development and advancements of Automated Vehicles (AVs), from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to Autonomous Vehicles, are a game-changer from the traditional cars we are so accustomed to, and that consumers’ lack of familiarity and potential over-reliance on “over-hyped” AV capabilities creates unprecedented safety risks. But how different really is this advancement from previous developments of vehicle technologies? What can we learn from past consumer adoption and growing pains? What are the latest trends in laws, policies, and enforcement related to automation functions?
In this session, we will hear from a range of stakeholders on how consumer experiences and expectations relate to liability, regulation, and policy considerations for AVs, including the relative responsibilities of car / technology companies; state, federal and local regulators; AV users; concerns raised by “deceptive naming or marketing” and over-reliance on technology by the consumer; as well as a discussion of what laws may need to change to unlock the future for AVs.
