Session Description and Agenda
Description
Please join us for a dynamic session on digital twins, as well as the broader umbrella of roadway digital infrastructure (RDI)!
Digital twins are playing an increasingly prominent role in helping decisionmakers understand and manage how systems work. We'll hear insights from industry, government (federal, state, local), and academia about how they are exploring the transformative applications of digital twins in transportation. We'll also probe the challenges of building, maintaining, using, and sharing digital twins.
We'll then broaden our scope to talk about roadway digital infrastructure (RDI). There are a multitude of RDI types, of which digital twins are a subset. The many RDI types, as well as the large number of stakeholders, means RDI holds tremendous potential - but also faces many challenges in terms of interoperability, timeliness, and trustworthiness for data-sharing across device manufacturers, deployers/providers, and technologies. Our interactive breakout session invites you to engage, discuss, and play as we dissect RDI's key attributes in a game of "Guess What?!" It is a unique opportunity to collaborate with fellow professionals as we pool our expertise and creativity to demystify the very broad field of RDI.
Agenda
PRESENTATIONS (40 mins)
* Enabling Interoperable Geospatial Data (Chris Thibodeau / Dynamic Map Platform)
* Collaborative Distributed Testing and the Virtual Open Innovation Collaborative Environment for Safety (VOICES) (Danielle Chou / Federal Highway Administration)
* Transforming Chattanooga’s Transportation: Digitization of Real-World Smart Corridors (Mina Sartipi / Univ of Tennessee at Chattanooga)
* Maps Reimagined - Building a Digital Infrastructure Foundation (Monali Shah / Google)
PANEL DISCUSSION (moderated by Robin Laqui / Leidos) (20 mins)
* (above presenters)
* Potential topics include:
-Different ways to use digital twins
-Challenges of using digital twins (fidelity, validation, interoperability, etc.)
-Business models for digital twins
-Access and sharing digital twins
* INTERACTIVE BREAKOUT: “Guess What?! Roadway Digital Infrastructure Edition” (30 mins)
Come play a game of “Guess What?!” - our digital infrastructure edition of the classic guessing game! Participants will ask questions to try to identify a roadway digital infrastructure (RDI) element from a list of examples. This game is designed to not only engage participants in a collaborative and enjoyable way but also to provoke a deeper understanding of key RDI attributes. All questions will be collected by the organizers for offline analysis to understand how these attributes might be used to define technical needs for different types of RDI. Come help us advance interoperable RDI development and use across the nation!
PLEASE BRING YOUR LAPTOPS!!!
Session Objectives
* Learn how others are using digital twins and the types of decisions they make using their models.
* Discuss challenges related to digital twins, including fidelity, validation, access, and costs.
* Identify key attributes of roadway digital infrastructure. These attributes may give rise to an RDI classification system that could help the community better understand interoperability, timeliness, and trustworthiness requirements for different types of RDI.
