Speaker Biography
Jane Lappin’s work focuses on the impacts of highly automated vehicles, and the development of international research collaborations. She managed large ITS project evaluations and international programs at the USDOT Volpe Center, and then directed public policy engagement for automated vehicles at the Toyota Research Institute where she focused on vehicle and roadway safety and accessibility.
Jane’s career was defined in 1992 when, as a junior staffer to the USDOT Intelligent Vehicle Highway System blue-ribbon advisory group, she helped write the report that led to the creation of the ITS Joint Program Office.
She is best known for her work as co-founder and organizer of the annual TRB Automated Road Transportation Symposium (ARTS). She chaired the TRB ITS Committee, the Vehicle-Highway Automation Committee, and co-Chaired the NRC Forum on Preparing for Automated Vehicles and Shared Mobility. Jane was active for many years with the World Economic Forum, and served as an appointed expert to the UNECE Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety. She is member of the advisory council for the Carnegie Mellon University Traffic21 Institute, and an advisor to the European SHOW project (SHared automation Operating models for Worldwide adoption).
Jane was honored by NHTSA in 2023 with the U.S. Government Special Award of Appreciation in recognition of her distinguished career, outstanding leadership to advance transportation safety.
Jane is currently a Partner at Blue Door Strategy and Research, LLC, a women-owned consultancy focused on transportation planning, technology, policy, and business strategy.
