Lectern Session: Applying a Safe Systems Approach for the Youngest Travelers
Moderator(s):
Andy Boenau
Session Description
The “all ages and abilities” mantra has become mainstream among transportation planners, but transportation systems continue to put an unnecessary level of risk on children. This is true whether kids are traveling by foot, on a bike, or in the seat of a motor vehicle. This session highlights the inequitable treatment of society’s most vulnerable road users—children. Learn about targeted strategies to address pedestrian safety disparities, child passenger disparities, and the impact of race, income, and social vulnerability. Through individual presentations and a panel discussion, attendees will gain actionable insights into crafting community-centered interventions to change our safety culture. This session is vital for anyone working towards Vision Zero.
