Presenter: Maria Carbone
Bio: Maria Carbone is Principal Administrator in the Research and Innovation Unit in the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission where she coordinates research related to connectivity, gender, digitalisation of transport and its socio-economic aspects. She is responsible for transport research collaboration and is an appointed member of the Programme Committee of the Transport Research Arena (TRA 2020), Europe’s largest biennial transport conference. Maria holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Waterloo, Canada; a Master’s in Business Administration from the SDA L. Bocconi University, Milan, and a Certificate in Project Management in Infrastructure and Engineering Technologies from MIT, Boston.
Shari Schaftlein has 33 years of public service spanning tribal, state, and federal governments and nonprofit. She has held leadership positions in the FHWA Office of Planning, Environment, and Realty for 15 years. As Director of the Office of Human Environment, she supervises 3 teams responsible for: financial oversight of the Office research program; advancing multimodal connectivity; accelerating project delivery employing sensitive design principals; implementing the Transportation Alternatives Program; and, administering procedures and standards for modifying the National Highway System and the Strategic Highway Network.
