Craig E. Philip
Research Professor
Vanderbilt University
Dr. Craig Philip has been with Vanderbilt University since 2015, serving as Research Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Center for Transportation and Operational Resilience (VECTOR). Dr. Philip’s research focus is on the mobility domain and includes institutional resilience and sustainability assessments, the application of risk management tools to public policymaking, management and sustainability especially of maritime networks and operations, carrier safety management and regulations, and balancing multi-stakeholder interests.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Dr. Philip spent more than 35 years with companies in the maritime, rail, and intermodal industries, including Conrail and Southern Pacific Railroads. He joined Ingram Industries in 1982 and from 1999 until 2014, he served as President/CEO of Ingram Barge Company as it grew to become the largest American marine transportation carrier.
As an industry leader he served as Chairman of the American Waterway Operators, the National Waterways Conference and the National Waterways Foundation, and Chaired the US Chamber of Commerce’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Through this service he has been actively engaged in public policy development with regulatory agencies such as the Coast Guard and the US Dept. of Transportation, and with infrastructure providers such as the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Today, Dr Philip is on the Boards of the ArcBest Corporation (publicly traded trucking firm) and the National Waterways Foundation, is Vice-Chairmen of the Seamen’s Church Institute Board, and is a Member of the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board and Vice-Chairman of its Marine Board.
Dr. Philip earned masters and doctorate degrees from MIT and his bachelor’s degree from Princeton, all in Civil Engineering. In 2014, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, he is a Distinguished Diplomate in the Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port and Navigation Engineers, and has received a Certification by Eminence in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
