Visualizing Scheduled Transit Frequency with TransitFlow
Description
Abstract:
Scheduled transit frequency is a key component of any public transit system. Transit systems with higher frequency and shorter waiting times will yield a more reliable and empowering experience for passengers than those with lower frequency and longer waiting times. Analyzing transit frequency in an intuitive way, however, can be difficult. Static transit maps provide geographic context but do not provide any information about frequency. Timetables provide information about frequency but lack geographic context. TransitFlow is an open-source GIS application that attempts to bridge this gap by enabling users to generate interactive, animated transit schedule maps. The motivation behind TransitFlow is to make it easier for transportation agencies and researchers to visualize existing or planned service in a way that its intuitive, compelling and digestible for the general public.
