Systematic Review of Equity in Transportation
Abstract
Equity in transportation has become a crucial component in transportation during the last decades. Although many studies have been conducted to address equity in transportation, it is still unclear whether these efforts help diverse population groups in an equitable and reasonable manner. Moreover, there is still no study that synthesizes all the research related to transportation equity. The main goal of this research is to comprehensively review goals, methods, findings, and recommendations from the existing literature for addressing equity in transportation as well as identify the gaps and research needs. We synthesize the existing equity studies, projects, and reports from different aspects, including infrastructure, policy, safety, mobility, accessibility, and environment. Moreover, we identify the current challenges of emerging transportation technologies, such as Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), to increase safety, mobility, and accessibility in the most equitable way. This research summarizes the significant findings of previous studies, discusses promising directions for developing more complex equity assessment methodologies for new transportation technologies, and contributes a synthesized review of previous projects related to equity in transportation. This research is in line with the topic “Balancing Equity and Efficiency when Deploying Emerging Transportation Technologies” of the conference, and contributes to shaping the future of mobility by providing an overview resource to transportation authorities and researchers who need organized and comprehensive literature on the different aspects of transportation equity. Moreover, the highlighted research gaps point the way for equity research on upcoming transportation technology.
