Energy Efficiency in a Future CAV Fleet
Date and Time: Wednesday, July 20: 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM Location: Grand A-D
Chris Atkinson
Director of Smart Mobility & Professor, Ohio State University
PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION
The energy efficiency of the future CAV fleet is a critically important issue. As vehicles become more electrified with increasing connectivity and automation, their critical material and semiconductor content increases significantly. Are we trading the fleeting era of energy independence achieved in the 2019-2020 timeframe for an almost complete dependence on imported materials and components? What will future projected increases in VMT do to our decarbonization and energy efficiency efforts? What CAV technologies have the potential to counteract the effects of increasing VMT? This presentation will address these and related energy issues in the future CAV fleet.
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Chris Atkinson is the Director of Smart Mobility and professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State University focusing on next-generation mobility and advanced transportation technologies including CAVs. From 2014 to 2020 he served at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) in the US Department of Energy, where he developed NEXTCAR, a $55 million program to use connectivity and automation to improve vehicle energy efficiency. For 15 years he was a consultant in the area of advanced transportation powertrains including emissions reduction, rapid transient calibration, hybrid electric vehicles, and virtual sensing. He is a Fellow of ASME and SAE, and has received tenure at both OSU and West Virginia University. He holds 2 US and international patents in emissions reduction technologies, and his technical papers have been cited over 2,500 times.
