Suzanne Markle President/CEO Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics
Suzanne Markle serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA), where she leads the strategic direction of the institution’s multi-campus operations, academic programs, and industry partnerships. In this role, she oversees initiatives focused on academic quality, workforce alignment, regulatory compliance, and long-term institutional growth in support of the aviation industry’s evolving workforce needs.
With more than 26 years of service to PIA, Markle brings extensive experience in career-focused aviation education and institutional leadership. Her background includes leadership across academic operations, enrollment management, student services, and institutional administration. She holds a Master of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, and a certificate in Diversity and Inclusion.
In 2020, Markle was appointed by the U.S. Department of Transportation to serve on the Women in Aviation Advisory Board (WIAAB). Since then, Markle has remained actively engaged in national aviation workforce initiatives through her service on the Board of Directors for the Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC), where she supports efforts to expand FAA testing capacity and strengthen aviation technician pipelines. She also participates in legislative outreach and industry forums focused on workforce development, aviation training, and technical education policy.
Abstract
The aviation maintenance industry faces a critical workforce crisis. Thirty-five percent of FAA-certificated technicians are over 62, commercial aviation already has a 10% mechanic shortage, and North America will need 123,000 new technicians by 2042 — yet only about 9,000 new certificates are issued annually.
Addressing this gap requires a coordinated strategy built on three pillars: Recruit, Train, and Retain.
Recruitment must expand beyond traditional pipelines to reach high school students, veterans transitioning from military service, and career changers — through school outreach, scholarship programs, and hands-on discovery events. Training programs must blend interactive, theory-plus-lab curricula with industry-aligned standards, advanced troubleshooting, and real-world diagnostic tools that mirror actual shop environments. Retention demands robust student support — peer tutoring, AI-enabled learning technology, mentorship and leadership programs, and streamlined program lengths that keep students engaged and on track to completion.
Graduate employment rates ranging from 90–98%, average starting salaries of $53K–$64K, and median earnings of $80,825 four years post-graduation — placing PIA graduates in the top 5% of all U.S. institutions evaluated by the Department of Education College Scorecard — demonstrate that this approach produces meaningful outcomes and sustainable careers.
