Abstract
This presentation examines the transformation of airfield management through the convergence of autonomous technologies, regulatory frameworks, organizational culture change, and digital twin integration. Core technologies, including robotics, AI, cyber, sensor networks, and automated systems, enable real-time decision-making, continuous operations, and measurable gains in safety and efficiency. Multi-modal coordination across air, ground, and terminal operations is explored as a critical enabler.
Key implementation challenges are addressed, including legacy system integration, cybersecurity risks, and regulatory compliance, with attention to ongoing FAA and ACRP research. The development of ordinances governing operational standards, safety requirements, and liability provisions is discussed. Cultural barriers to adoption including fear of job displacement and mistrust of technology are examined alongside mitigation strategies. Finally, digital twin technology is introduced as a tool for real-time monitoring, simulation-based analysis, and predictive maintenance in autonomous airfield environments.
