This event, which was originally scheduled for 2021, is being rescheduled to May 31 - June 2, 2022 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. TRB is closely monitoring the evolving situation related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Conference Overview and Scope
The Sustainability and Emerging Transportation Technology (SETT) Conference, now rescheduled for May 31 - June 2, 2022, will focus on investigating solutions for shaping rapidly advancing transportation technologies (e.g., connected and automated vehicles) and new approaches to mobility (e.g., shared services) in ways that will benefit all users of the transportation systems. The SETT 2022 conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers to discuss and debate the intersection of sustainability and emerging transportation technologies with the focus on solutions. As these terms are often used quite broadly, we define them here.

  • Sustainability takes a holistic view of the “triple-bottom-line”, such as environmental, economic, and social factors. Technology should not create more problems than it solves, particularly with regards to social equity (i.e., accessibility, inclusiveness, safety, and security), economic efficiency (i.e., cost-effective and within people’s ability and willingness to pay) or environmental stewardship (i.e., reduced carbon pollution, and improved water and air quality).
  • Emerging transportation technologies are those in early stages of adoption, deployed as “pilots,” or expected to come to market in the near-term. Examples include new mobility services (e.g., ridesharing, e-scooters), digital technologies (e.g., ridehailing apps, dynamic pricing, shared data exchanges, and payment platforms), connected and automated vehicles, transportation electrification, and autonomous goods delivery services (e.g., rolling robots, drones).

Extended Call for Abstracts SETT 2022
As this conference has been rescheduled, there are various options for submitting an abstract for technical or poster sessions.

  • If you submitted an abstract for the postponed 2020 conference, you may opt to preserve it or withdraw it.
  • Regardless of whether or not you submitted a 2020 conference abstract, you may submit a new abstract.

All of these actions can be done through the conference website. Note that if you preserve your already submitted abstract(s), it will not be re-reviewed but will go forward with the review score previously obtained.

We seek abstracts from researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and students from all around the world focused on emerging issues at the intersection of sustainability and transportation technologies in four tracks: (1) Automated, Connected, and Digital Technologies, (2) Decarbonization, Energy, Emissions, (3) New Mobility Services, and (4) Urban Planning and Transportation Demand Management. Additionally, we are interested in both the supply and demand side of mobility. Example topics include but are not limited to:

  • Moving beyond car-centric cities
  • Various mobility alternatives (Mobility-as-a-Service, shared mobility, micromobility, etc.)
  • The evolution of public transportation and its integration with shared mobility
  • The impact of emerging technologies on urban goods and freight movement
  • Application of automation in transportation systems
  • Sustainable mobility solutions for rural areas and small towns
  • Decarbonization and vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) reduction 
  • The role of mobility pricing in the future mobility landscape
  • Data-driven social, economic, environmental impact analyses
  • Balancing equity and efficiency when deploying emerging transportation technologies
  • Energy-efficient mobility systems
  • Transportation demand management
  • Promotion of holistic sustainability outcomes
  • Life-cycle environmental impacts of new technologies
  • Impacts on urban and rural area planning and policymaking
  • Policy implications of new technologies
  • Advances in measurement and modeling
  • Behavioral science applications and techniques
  • Case studies and examples from practice, including decision-making approaches and impacts of regulation

Abstracts of up to 500 words will be accepted in the following categories:

  • Scientific/research abstracts
  • Practitioner/policy/case study abstracts
  • Student-led abstracts (sub-category of above - lead author must be a full- or part-time university student at the time of submission)

Each new abstract will undergo a formal peer-review process and submitters will be notified of acceptance to the conference program by new date. Accepted presentations will be assigned to either a technical or poster session. Highly-rated abstracts will be invited to submit full-length papers for a special issue of the Transportation Research Record (TRR): Journal of the Transportation Research Board.

Submission Format
Proposals must be written in English and include name, affiliation, and contact information (email) for the corresponding presenter. Information about all co-authors must also be provided. To be considered for presentation, abstracts must be limited to 500 words, as well as:

  • Identify the topic area the presentation will address;
  • Describe how the subject of the presentation contributes to shaping the future of mobility; and
  • Demonstrate that the subject to be presented is sufficiently advanced beyond untested new ideas or early work in progress. Consolidated results of recent projects or studies are preferred.

What are the Benefits of Being a Presenter?
SETT 2022 presenters will receive valuable professional exposure before convened international subject matter experts affiliated with TRB and other practitioner networks. As a presenter, your name, organization, profile image, and a brief biographical statement will be featured in the online conference program. Additionally, presenters receive a reduced registration rate.

How are Proposals Selected?
A technical selection committee, comprised of subject matter experts with a keen interest in end-user perspectives, innovative ideas, applied science and case studies, and an informed awareness of topic timeliness and relevancy to identified conference themes, will review and rate all abstracts accordingly.
