Speaker Biography
Dr. Bin Ran is the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor and Director of ITS Program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Dr. Ran also serves as the Dean of the Joint Research Institute on Internet of Mobility, founded by Southeast University, China and University of Wisconsin at Madison. He served as the Director of the Traffic Operations and Safety Lab (TOPS) at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Dr. Ran is an expert in ITS and Collaborative Automated Driving System (CADS). He has more than 146 patents or patents pending in the US, China, Japan, Europe, and other countries. In addition, Dr. Ran’s international team has been developing system designs and pilot systems of CADS in China and US. Dr. Ran serves as the Chair for Committee on Connected and Autonomous Mobility, International Road Federation (IRF), which serves as the forum of global collaboration for more than 70 countries. He also leads a TRB Task Force to develop system architecture and development roadmaps for vehicle-highway automation. He serves as the Chair for Working Committee on Automated Driving, China Highway and Transportation Society (CHTS). Dr. Ran is the author of two leading textbooks on transportation planning and six books on intelligent highways; the author of over 748 scientific articles. He is an associate editor of Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. He is the Founding President of Chinese Overseas Transportation Association (COTA) from 1996 to 1998. He is the recipient of Wilbur S. Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award from ITE in 2018.
