Presenter bio: Robert H. Cary, P.E., L.S, began his career with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in 1992. In January 2018, the Governor Northam appointed him VDOT’s Chief Deputy Commissioner. As the agency’s second in command, Cary supports VDOT’s Commissioner and the 7,800 men and women of VDOT alongside its public and private sector partners in the delivery of VDOT’s $6.4 billion in projects and services to the Commonwealth’s 8.5 million citizens.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Deputy Commissioner, Cary was VDOT’s Chief of Innovation where he served as VDOT’s executive leader responsible for bringing innovation to every aspect of VDOT’s business. In this role, Cary also had responsibility for VDOT’s Office of Public Private Partnerships (P3), Virginia’s Transportation Research Council, and VDOT’s Office of Technology Strategic Planning. Cary previously managed three of VDOT’s Construction Districts. His most recent District assignment was serving as the Richmond District Engineer, where he was responsible for leading 870 employees in managing a $450 million annual budget and delivering all aspects of VDOT’s construction, maintenance, operations, and administrative programs across nearly 19,000 lane-miles of state roadways and almost 2,600 National Bridge Inventory (NBI) structures.
