Session Description and Agenda
Description
Vehicles equipped with automated driving systems (ADS) have encountered challenges while operating in proximity to vulnerable road users, work zones and emergency response vehicles (https://www.ttnews.com/articles/gms-self-driving-expansion-faces-challenges-san-francisco) due to a lack of prior situational awareness. This challenge can be mitigated by enhancing the vehicles’ perception through the integration of infrastructure information using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity. This will enable vehicles to proactively plan their trajectories around traffic events using cooperative driving automation (CDA). This session aims to engage industry pioneers to explore implementation ready CDA use cases in vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) Level 1 and Level 2 capabilities, leveraging existing V2X technologies.
Agenda
1. Introduction to FHWA’s Vision for CDA
Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Sudhakar Nallamothu will commence the session with a comprehensive overview of FHWA's vision and goals for CDA, emphasizing the commitment to safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
2. Expert Presentations: State of V2X and Future Outlook
This segment will feature industry experts will provide presentations on the current state and future outlook of V2X technologies, a key requirement in CDA implementation. They will share their insights into V2X deployment strategies, partnerships, and ongoing initiatives supporting ADAS Level 1 and Level 2 automation. Invited speakers include:
Jonathan Sprinkle from Vanderbilt University
Jiaqi Ma from UCLA
David Lucas from Maricopa County
John Kenney from Toyota
3. CDA Panel Discussion
A dynamic panel discussion will follow featuring industry leaders who will delve into strategies for accelerating CDA implementation. Key discussion topics will include the safety and operational benefits of connectivity and smart infrastructure combined with automated vehicles, and will address technological hurdles for near-term implementation of CDA use cases, standards, and strategies.
Session Objectives
Key obstacles to widespread CDA implementation, including standardization, interoperability, technology, reliability, market penetration, and public acceptance, will be addressed. Audiences will gain insights into the following:
1. CDA Readiness: Understanding the current state of V2X and CDA technologies and review existing and planned implementations that aim to support ADAS Level 1 and Level 2 automation through V2X deployment.
2. CDA Domains: Learn about the CDA domain concept and discuss requirements needed to implement multiple CDA technologies operating concurrently within specific environments.
3. CDA Implementation Strategy: A discussion on the benefits of CDA and strategize how to overcome challenges, accelerating the implementation of CDA pilots.
4. What are YOU ready to deploy? Attendees can utilize the presented information to accelerate the deployment of V2X technologies, leading to CDA pilots.
