Similar to other historic contaminants such as Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), asbestos and lead, PFAS are emerging contaminants that will define a generation. The surface-transportation and aviation industries are seeing, and will continue to see, PFAS-related impacts in projects and operations. This session will explore the latest legal, liability, policy, investigation, management, and remediation strategies to address PFAS impacts in the transportation sector investigation, management, and remediation strategies to address PFAS impacts in the transportation sector.
Speaker Biography
Dr Halmen has significant expertise in durability of cementitious materials such as concrete and controlled low strength materials. He served as the principal investigator and as a researcher in multiple research projects funded by various organizations including American Concrete Institute (ACI), Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), and National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). Dr. Halmen authored multiple journal papers and research reports and organized/presented in national and international conferences. Dr. Halmen also developed the teaching resources of ACI’s “Contractor’s guide to quality concrete.” He is the director of the US DOT funded University Transportation Center; Environmentally Responsible Transportation for Communities of Concern (ERTC3) and he is a cabinet member of the Missouri Center for Transportation Innovation (MCTI). He serves as the secretary of the ACI technical committee 222, corrosion of metals in concrete and as the task group chair to develop a standard critical chloride threshold test. He served in the board of directors of the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Great Plains Chapter and in the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) national committees.
