Panel VIII: Re-writing Normal: Lifting As We Climb
Date and Time: Wednesday, September 11, 2024: 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Location: Back Bay Room
Moderator:
Beverly Scott | Introducing Youth to American Infrastructure, Inc.
Session Description
Women and people of color have historically been left behind in transportation, but the industry is shifting. The experiences of these groups and other marginalized folks are being heard, their needs addressed, as more women, people of color, and individuals from other under-represented groups climb the ladder of leadership and influence. How do we ensure we are lifting up as we climb, ensuring the voices of Black and Latinx/e folks, of women and gender-expansive individuals not only do not fall again into the margins of the industry but are lifted up as important and valued? Join this 90-minute panel discussion that focuses on the importance of an equity-centered, community-building, and cross-sectoral approach incorporating lived-experience and meaningful, open dialogues.
This panel brings together representatives from two public agencies (Toronto Transit Commission and California High Speed Rail), a community-organizing policy center (Jobs to Move America), and a nonprofit agency (iyai+) for a discussion of transportation and sustainable mobility as gateways to opportunities and a lifeline to economic, social, and environmental benefits for all people and communities. This interactive session will be moderated by Dr. Beverly Scott, CEO of Introducing Youth to American Infrastructure, Inc. ("iyai+"), a nonprofit that motivates young people to become tomorrow's infrastructure leaders, skilled workforce, innovators, and entrepreneurs—with emphasis on significantly increasing the representation of historically under-represented groups like women and people of color. Join this event to be a part of a critical conversation on shaping an action plan for a more equitable and diverse future.
