Ed Abel, Jr. is the Director of Operational Safety for SEPTA. Ed has over 25 years of experience in the safety field. He has safety experience in general industry, construction and demolition. Ed also has safety experience working in refineries, chemical plants, and pharmaceutical facilities.

Ed has been employed at SEPTA for over 11 years and is responsible for the safe operation of the bus, trolley, and train fleets. He is also responsible for coordinating the training for the first responders on SEPTA’s various equipment. His department is in charge of keeping compliance with various regulations and interfacing with the FRA, FTA, emergency response agencies, and municipalities.

Ed has a B.S. from Peirce College and an MBA from Rosemont College. He has been a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years and an Emergency Medical Technician for over 25 years. Ed is married to his wife Jana and they have three teenage sons, two of which are volunteer firefighters as well.
